Game Changer
Whether you have occasionally troubled skin or a full-blown breakout, Clinique Derm Pro Dr. Michelle Henry, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, is here to help.
Q. I’m trying to clear up my skin, but a lot of treatments dry it out. Please help!
Dr. Henry: I hear that from a lot my patients. Salicylic acid helps to gently exfoliate surface dead skin cells and deep clean pores for a clearer looking complexion. However, too much of a good thing can lead to drying. Clinique iD Dramatically Different Hydrating Clearing Jelly Anti-Imperfections partners salicylic acid with hyaluronic acid, which is a magic humectant—one molecule can absorb 1,000 times its weight in water. This combo clears up congestion, clogged pores, uneven texture and excess oil, without causing dryness.
Q. Can moisturizing lead to acne or breakouts?
Dr. Henry: If you are acne-prone, it is really critical you use the right type of moisturizer for your skin type. Also, make sure it is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores or promote acne breakouts.
Q. Any golden rules beyond using the right skincare to keep your skin clear?
Dr. Henry: Stick to a consistent skin care regimen. Cleanse and hydrate your skin twice a day, just like you brush your teeth. Also exfoliate regularly, depending on your skin type. And don’t pick! It’s tempting, but can cause irritation and scarring. And don’t forget to clean your phone daily, your pillowcase weekly and your makeup brushes monthly.
Q. My skin has a lot of bumps, dry patches, and clogged pores, but no breakouts. Should I use an acne treatment or something else?
Dr. Henry: You need a daily moisturizer that does three things: exfoliates, hydrates, and controls oil. Clinique iD for Imperfections is a great option because it contains salicylic, lactic and glycolic acids to gently exfoliate; hyaluronic acid to hydrate and Laminaria Saccharina, a seaweed extract, that helps control oil. If you get active breakouts, you should use a powerful acne treatment, like Clinique 3-Step Acne Solutions System, which contains salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, two effective ingredients for treating acne.
